Egg Industry Chief on Arrival of H5N1 Bird Flu
On Wednesday, New Zealand reported its first H5N1 bird flu case after a migratory brown skua seabird found on a beach near Wellington tested positive, Biosecurity Minister Andrew Hoggard announced.
This case follows virus detection last month in Australia, the last continent to report H5N1, and a confirmed case on Heard Island, a sub-Antarctic Australian territory, in late 2025.
Health officials have started a vaccination programme for 300 core breeding birds from five endangered species, Hoggard said. He stated there is no evidence of mass mortality or transmission between wild birds in New Zealand.
Massey University professor Brett Gartrell warned the virus could push critically endangered birds to extinction, noting native species lack defenses against such threats. "If it spreads quickly in New Zealand, we could be in trouble," he said.
New Zealand may see a similar pattern to neighboring Australia, which had 14 confirmed or presumed positive H5 detections as of Wednesday, according to Hoggard. Officials have been preparing biosecurity plans with the poultry industry.
