Man dies after New Year's Day swim at Brighton beach
A 51-year-old man from Kettering died after cold water shock risks caused difficulty swimming near Brighton Palace Pier, officials said.
- On Thursday, 1 January, a 51-year-old man from Kettering was recovered from the sea west of Brighton Palace Pier and pronounced dead at the scene.
- Alerted at around 10am, coastguard rescue teams, Brighton RNLI inshore lifeboat, Sussex Police, ambulance service and air ambulance responded to assist.
- The RNLI warned that cold water shock and weather can endanger winter swimmers and urged people to check sea conditions; people new to open water should consult GPs, especially with cardiac issues.
- A spokesman said the coroner has been informed, the death is not being treated as suspicious, and the man's next of kin have been informed with privacy requested.
- It follows a Christmas Day disappearance in Budleigh Salterton, Devon, where Matthew Upham and another man went missing during a swim, with the coastguard standing down searches later that day.
