Kenya's Ngetich Breaks Women-only Half Marathon World Record by a Second
Ngetich won in 1:05:15 and beat the previous women-only mark by one second after leading from the start.
On Sunday, Kenyan runner Agnes Jebet Ngetich set a new women-only half marathon world record at the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen, stopping the clock at one hour, five minutes and 15 seconds.
Ngetich's victory capped a remarkable record-breaking streak after she broke the women-only 10 kilometer world record last year and ran under 29 minutes in Valencia in 2024.
Dominating from the outset on a sunny morning, Ngetich finished 50 seconds ahead of compatriot Veronica Loleo, while Sweden's Andreas Almgren won the men's half marathon by breaking his own European record with 58:06.
"My coach believed in me and told me that I could do it," said Ngetich, crediting her support team as she surpassed the previous women-only record set by Kenyan Peres Jepchirchir in 2020.
The 25-year-old plans to return to track races for the 2027 World Athletics Championships, saying "It is my dream to win a gold medal on the track. It is the only one I am missing.
