New Study Links Eating Disorders to Genetics

Researchers found 6 binge-eating loci and 8 anorexia loci, strengthening evidence that eating disorders reflect both psychiatric and metabolic biology.

A new international study has, for the first time, linked eating disorders to genetics, challenging the traditional view they are primarily psychological illnesses. The research was published in the UK Journal Nature Mental Health and includes genetic data from more than 500 New Zealand participants, contributed by a team from Otago University. Associate Professor Jenny Jordan spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.
