New signs found of giant gas planet in 'Earth's neighbourhood'
ALPHA CENTAURI STAR SYSTEM, AUG 8 – Researchers detected a gas giant near the Alpha Centauri star, with moons that might support life, using the James Webb Space Telescope and planning further studies with the Grace Roman Space Telescope.
- Recently, researchers using the James Webb Space Telescope have found strong evidence of a potential gas planet in the Alpha Centauri star system.
- Last year, the potential gas planet was detected by JWST but vanished in follow-up observations, leaving its existence uncertain.
- Said Dr Howett, 'Probably the planet was either behind the star or too close to be able to see it. You need an element of luck,' highlighting observational challenges.
- Moving forward, JWST observations will help astronomers seek conclusive evidence and determine the planet's composition using spectral imaging, researchers said.
- To bolster confirmation efforts, researchers said they plan to use NASA’s Grace Roman Space Telescope, which is due to start operating in 2027.

New evidence of giant gas planet around ‘Earth’s closest solar twin’
The confirmation of the gas giant planet would mark a milestone as the closest planet to Earth that orbits in a habitable zone of a star like the sun
Astronomers have found new concrete evidence for the existence of a giant gas planet in the star system closest to our own. The planet is four and a half light-years from Earth and is believed to be a close neighbor of our solar system. It could also have moons that could support life.
NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope spots a potential gas giant
Astronomers using NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope believe they have spotted a giant planet orbiting a series of stars a little more than four light-years away. The system, known as Alpha Centauri, is a triple star system, and due to its apparent brightness, scientists have struggled to confirm exactly how many planets may exist.NASA says using the Webb’s Mid-Infrared Instrument has produced the clearest signal yet of a potential gas giant circl…
The Alpha Centauri triple star system is only four light-years away from Earth. James Webb Space Telescope has found evidence of a giant planet there.
