New non-invasive test can quickly spot meningitis in babies

SPAIN, MOZAMBIQUE, AND MOROCCO, AUG 11 – The ultrasound test detected meningitis with 94% accuracy in over 200 infants, offering a safer alternative to lumbar punctures, researchers said.

  • On publication in Pediatric Research, ISGlobal researchers unveiled a high-resolution ultrasound device as a non-invasive alternative to lumbar punctures for meningitis detection in infants.
  • Meningitis is an inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord that can be fatal if not diagnosed early, as it currently requires an invasive lumbar puncture.
  • According to the study, the test identified meningitis in newborns and infants with 94% accuracy, correctly classifying 17 of 18 meningitis cases and 55 of 58 controls.
  • The device could reduce lumbar punctures for clinically unstable patients and improve early diagnosis and non-invasive monitoring, Professor Quique Bassat said.
  • This validation marks a first step towards its incorporation into clinical practice, potentially improving access across Morocco’s health system, Javier Jiménez said.
