New Hampshire Rejects $100M Bitcoin-Backed Bond
Councilors said the plan could expose the state to too much risk, even as supporters argued the loan would cost taxpayers nothing.
On Wednesday, The New Hampshire Executive Council rejected a $100 million bond proposal backed by Bitcoin, ending a bid to attract digital finance innovators to the Granite State.
Governor Kelly Ayotte and The New Hampshire Business Finance Authority touted the proposal as a "groundbreaking" and "historic" move intended to give the state an edge in the digital asset economy.
Key-Wallace argued the plan carried zero risk for taxpayers, though Democrat Karen Liot Hill expressed concern about lending state legitimacy to a "very volatile" asset class.
Following a failed motion by Liot Hill to table the proposal, Janet Stevens and David Wheeler joined her in opposition, while Joseph Kenney and John Stephen voted in favor.
Key-Wallace stated Thursday that his team remains excited about the state's role in the digital asset economy, adding he would present the idea to the council again in the future.
