Google Maps Will Soon Help You Stay in the Right Lane

On Tuesday, Google Maps unveiled an AI-powered live lane guidance feature arriving first on the Polestar 4 in the U.S. and Sweden in the coming months using Android Automotive — Google built-in.
By fusing camera vision and AI with GPS, the system uses the Polestar 4's front-facing camera and on-device AI to analyze lane markings and road signs, integrating that with Google Maps' navigation, initially limiting support to highways.
The system will generate a live visualization on the dashboard display in Polestar 4 and issue in-cabin cues with dashboard lane highlights to guide lane choice.
Polestar and Google say the feature reduces missed exits and last-minute lane changes, lowering driver stress and improving safety, but Google stresses it remains advisory and requires drivers to steer.
Google plans to expand live lane guidance to more road types and car models in partnership with key automakers, building on Polestar's collaboration since 2020 and upcoming Gemini AI integration.
