New 'freedom flotilla' sets sail to try breaking Gaza blockade
SYRACUSE, SICILY, ITALY, JUL 13 – The Handala carries medical supplies, food, and children's equipment to Gaza amid a blockade that has caused over 6,500 deaths since March 2025, organizers said.
- Early this week, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition vessel Handala sailed from Syracuse, Sicily, carrying humanitarian aid and activists to challenge the Gaza blockade, aiming to break Israel's ban.
- Amid a 21-month war, Gaza's Health Ministry reported 6,572 killed and over 23,000 injured, underscoring urgency.
- The Handala, a former Norwegian trawler loaded with medical supplies, food, children's equipment, and medicines, is carrying around 15 pro-Palestinian activists over about 1,800 km in the Mediterranean Sea, a voyage expected to last roughly a week.
- Adding political heft, `We want to show international solidarity`, Claude Lostik said, as Gabrielle Catala and Emma Fourreau will join in Gallipoli on July 18.
- Following the flotilla's launch, UN special rapporteurs request guaranteed safe passage to Gaza under international law, while UN agencies warn maritime aid alone cannot prevent famine, complicating the mission.
