Governor Ron DeSantis Appoints New Leader of FDLE
Keefe, a former DeSantis aide, led the migrant flight operation and will need Senate confirmation before taking over the agency.
On Tuesday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida Cabinet appointed Larry Keefe as the new commissioner of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement , placing a longtime ally at the helm of the state's top law enforcement agency.
Keefe replaces Mark Glass, who is leaving his post next month to become undersheriff for the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office after leading the FDLE since 2022.
Known for coordinating the 2022 migrant flights, Keefe also faced scrutiny over using a private email alias 'Clarice Starling' to help a client win a state contract. He played a key role in the 2023 ouster of Hillsborough State Attorney Andrew Warren.
While Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson noted he only learned of the appointment on Monday, the Florida Cabinet approved the selection on Tuesday. The position remains subject to formal confirmation by the Florida Senate.
Keefe takes over the agency three months before the end of DeSantis' second term, arriving to lead the FDLE as it continues managing ongoing public corruption investigations and statewide criminal case operations.
