2 Suspects Facing Charges After Large Police Investigation at Sandy Springs Park, Officials Say
Police arrested two suspects and said no injuries were reported after a daylong search forced a park closure, school lockdown and voting suspension.
On Tuesday, May 19, Sandy Springs Police officers shut down Morgan Falls Overlook Park and placed nearby Ison Springs Elementary School on a 'soft lockdown' while searching for a man in 'military-style gear.' The investigation suspended voting for about 4 hours.
Following an alleged dispute with another person, a man entered the wooded area, and a 911 caller later reported hearing possible gunshots, prompting officers to expand the response out of an 'abundance of caution.'
Investigators arrested James Andrew Dutton in the park's parking lot, while officers took Elisha Deaton into custody in Cobb County near Aven Road and Conway Drive. Both face charges of possession of a firearm in a city park and possession of alcohol in a city park.
Fulton County election officials obtained a court order to extend voting hours until 11:02 p.m., ensuring all registered voters could cast ballots. Voting at the affected precinct restarted at approximately 4 p.m. after the suspension was lifted.
Investigators have found no evidence linking the incident to voting or election activity, and police stated there are no known threats to the community. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine whether the reported gunshots were connected to the suspects.
