New AI Tool Predicts Heart Failure 5 Years Early

The model analysed more than 70,000 scans and identified high-risk patients with 86% accuracy, researchers said.

  • Researchers at the University of Oxford developed an AI tool that predicts heart failure up to five years early by detecting fat changes around the heart invisible to the naked eye on routine CT scans.
  • The AI tool assessed patients across NHS Trusts and showed that those in the highest risk group were 20 times more likely to develop heart failure within five years, with an 86% accuracy prediction rate.
  • The British Heart Foundation supports rolling out the AI tool across the NHS, potentially benefiting approximately 350,000 patients who receive cardiac CT scans annually in the UK.
  • Experts say early detection through this AI can improve heart failure management, reduce severe heart damage, and help patients live longer in better health.
