'Never Seen Anything Like It': Boaters Rescue Bear Cub From Middle of Okanagan Lake
The family gave the cub food and time to dry before pushing it back toward shore after it climbed aboard, video showed.
- On Saturday, Sept. 12, Christina Zamniuk and her family rescued an exhausted bear cub struggling in the middle of Okanagan Lake by pulling the animal onto their boat's rear platform to prevent it from drowning.
- While boating toward Adventure Bay, the family noticed a black shape in the water, initially mistaking the small cub for a dog. The bear was paddling only with its front paws, struggling to keep its nose above the surface.
- Zamniuk used a rope to secure the cub, bringing it aboard to dry off while feeding it Cheetos. "He got right up there and he was absolutely shaking," Zamniuk said, noting the bear was clearly cold and scared.
- Following instructions from the Conservation Officer Service, the family released the animal near the shoreline. Zamniuk's husband provided a "good old push" off the boat, allowing the bear to scramble into nearby woods.
- Zamniuk hopes the cub will reunite with its mother, trusting the animal's advanced sense of smell could facilitate this. She added, "Maybe the Conservation Officers will go out there and just have a look around.
