Nevada GOP Primary Tests Trump Influence in Open House Race
Trump’s endorsement of David Flippo is sharpening a contest between a political newcomer and former state Sen. James Settelmeyer, analysts say.
Nevada's only Republican congressional seat is open for the first time in 15 years, as voters choose between James Settelmeyer and David Flippo in a primary testing President Donald Trump's influence.
Republican Rep. Mark Amodei announced his retirement earlier this year, prompting a contest between Settelmeyer, a veteran legislator, and Flippo, a newcomer with backing from former Rep. Matt Gaetz and the Freedom Caucus Fund.
Settelmeyer entered the race with nearly two decades of political experience, while Flippo secured Trump's endorsement last week, with the president calling his supporters "the most Highly Respected MAGA Warriors in Nevada."
Political science professor Jeremy Gelman notes that while experienced candidates were once shoe-ins, Republican primary politics have evolved, and Trump's support has proven influential in recent Senate primaries in Louisiana and Texas.
Nevada Democrats aim to challenge for the seat despite the district's large Republican registration advantage, suggesting Flippo's ties to Trump could alienate nonpartisan voters in the swing county of Washoe, home to Reno.
