Lonesome Dove: Larry McMurtry's Novel Set for Netflix Series Adapt
The straight-to-series adaptation will follow a cattle drive from the Rio Grande to Montana after rights issues delayed the greenlight.
- Netflix announced on Tuesday it ordered Lonesome Dove to series, with co-showrunners Zoe Kazan and Jeb Stuart reuniting after their work on East of Eden.
- Teton Ridge Entertainment acquired rights to Larry McMurtry's Pulitzer Prize-winning 1985 novel before partnering with Netflix to develop the series adaptation.
- The 1989 CBS miniseries starring Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones drew 26M viewers and earned 18 Emmy nominations, establishing a high benchmark for the new adaptation.
- Kazan and Stuart will write and executive produce, with Netflix Head of Scripted Series Jinny Howe praising their "emotional precision" and depth of character.
- No casting, director, or release date has been announced; finding actors to follow Duvall and Jones remains the harder part as production moves forward.
