Net migration lower than thought as more citizens leave Britain: Report
The Office for National Statistics revised migration data shows British emigration tripled to 257,000 last year, lowering net migration to 345,000 due to improved methodology.
- The Office for National Statistics published updated estimates showing net migration in the year ending December 2024 is now 345,000, down from an earlier 431,000.
- The ONS shifted its method from the International Passenger Survey to administrative data including Department for Work & Pensions Registration and Population Interaction Database and Home Office visa and border data.
- Revisions show British nationals' net migration moved to minus 114,000 in 2024, with 257,000 emigrating and 143,000 returning last year, ONS said.
- The revisions cut cumulative net migration for 2021–2024 to 2.5 million, and the UK population estimate falls by 97,000, the Office for National Statistics said.
- On November 27, the Office for National Statistics will publish its first estimate for net migration in the 12 months to June 2025, amid a heated debate over immigration and asylum, with Mahmood warning `If we fail to deal with this crisis, we will draw more people down a path that starts with anger and ends in hatred`.

Are we heading for Net Zero migration?
Drowned out by the noise of the Budget last week was the publication of a startling immigration report from the Office for National Statistics (ONS). It will prove to be of far greater political import than anything Rachel Reeves pulled out of her hat. The substantial increase follows major changes to the way the ONS measures immigration and emigration, bringing new clarity to long-term population movements. The revised data reflects a shift… Source
Net Migration Fell More Sharply Than Initially Estimated, Figures Show
Net migration to the UK in recent years peaked at a higher level than initially estimated and has since fallen more sharply, new figures show. Improved methods by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) suggest net migration hit a higher and slightly earlier peak of 944,000 in the year ending March 2023, compared with the previous estimate of 906,000 for the year ending June 2023. This was followed by a sharper fall than initially reported, wit…
