Nepal urges villagers to evacuate after flood triggered by landslide
On Sunday, October 11, 2026, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority issued a flood warning for the Budhi Gandaki River, urging residents to evacuate from areas downstream of Chumanubri Rural Municipality-6.
A dry landslide in Chumnubri, Gorkha district, about 100km west of Kathmandu, blocked the Budhi Gandaki River, triggering the downstream flooding alert.
"We have asked villagers living along the river banks downstream to evacuate and remain safe," said Dharmendra Kumar Mishra, the Gorkha district's most senior bureaucrat. Several houses and two suspension bridges were swept away.
National disaster authorities alerted residents across Gorkha, Tanahun, Chitwan, East Nawalparasi, and West Nawalparasi districts as army and police rescue personnel reached the area to monitor the situation.
The alert follows catastrophic August floods that killed at least 1,455 people with 5,285 missing. A 4.1 magnitude earthquake struck western Nepal on October 7, though officials stated the events are separate.
Flash floods along the Budhi-Gandaki River have swept away houses, two pedestrian suspension bridges and a steel vehicular bridge in the Gorkha district of Nepal. Four people are missing, and rescue operations and damage assessments are ongoing.
