Nelly Korda soaks up fan support and shrugs off late mistake, after 2-under 70 to start Women's PGA
Korda said the fan support was a surprise as Ina Yoon shot a tournament-record tying 63 and took a seven-stroke lead.
Nelly Korda shot a 2-under 70 in the first round of the KPMG Women's PGA Championship at Hazeltine National Golf Club, staying in the top 10 despite a double-bogey on the 16th.
The 27-year-old LPGA Tour leader is pursuing her third consecutive major this season, a feat only Babe Zaharias and Inbee Park have achieved, which would qualify Korda for the LPGA Hall of Fame.
After trading high-fives with young fans, Korda spotted girls wearing customized USA soccer-style jerseys with her favorite number, 13, calling the support "quite amazing."
A double-bogey on the signature 16th marred her round after one bad swing landed in the creek; Korda noted the tee shot is "pretty intimidating" and requires a risky club choice.
Ina Yoon leads the tournament with a record-tying 63, leaving Korda seven strokes back in a tie for 19th place ahead of her second round.
