Immigrant Detention Center “Cornhusker Clink” to Open in Nebraska
The McCook Work Camp will increase capacity from 185 to 300 detainees to assist immigration enforcement under section 287(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act.
- Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen announced on Tuesday the opening of the Cornhusker Clink immigration detention center in southwestern Nebraska near McCook.
- The center will transform the McCook Work Ethic Camp, a minimum-security prison currently housing 184 inmates, who will be transferred elsewhere.
- State employees will continue staffing the facility but will be paid by the federal government, while the Nebraska National Guard and State Patrol assist ICE enforcement efforts.
- Pillen said detainees will stay five to 50 days, and he expressed support for federal efforts to arrest and deport criminal illegal aliens, stating, "This is about keeping Nebraskans and Americans safe."
- Local leaders and residents raised concerns about community impact and requested transparency, while Pillen declined to speculate on the facility's future after the contract ends.
