Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, whose wife was NDP MLA, endorses BC Green Leader Lowan
Phillip says Lowan is a strong ally for Indigenous peoples and environmental stewardship as advance voting begins in the B.C. election.
Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, president of the Union of BC Indian Chiefs, endorsed Green Party Leader Emily Lowan on Friday, October 16, 2026.
Disputes with NDP Leader David Eby over the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act led Phillip to withdraw support from the NDP, which his late wife Joan represented as a New Democrat MLA.
Citing Lowan's "proactive, principled, evidence-based approach," Phillip said she is a "strong and courageous ally for Indigenous peoples in BC" who respects environmental stewardship and Indigenous rights.
Advance voting begins today in Saanichton, while Eby and Conservative interim leader Lorne Doerkson campaign in Metro Vancouver ahead of the October 24 election.
Previously backing the NDP in 2024, Phillip warned voters in Victoria that supporting the Greens helped the Conservatives, marking a significant strategic shift for the veteran Indigenous leader.
