BC Conservatives Say Massey Bridge Plan Would Pay for New Hospital
Doerkson says a bridge would cost $6 billion and save $2.5 billion for a new women and children’s hospital.
Conservative Leader Lorne Doerkson proposed scrapping the Fraser River Tunnel Project for a 10-lane George Massey Bridge, claiming the $6 billion plan would be more affordable and fund a new women and children's hospital in Surrey.
The BC NDP government's existing $8.5 billion tunnel project, currently under construction, aims to replace the 65-year-old George Massey Tunnel by September 2031, though Doerkson argues previous bridge plans were superior and "should have been completed years ago."
NDP Leader David Eby criticized the promise as "lunacy," warning that abandoning the tunnel would waste $581 million already spent and stating a $3 billion federal investment would be "vaporized."
Work on the tunnel currently employs 200 people at the Deas Island site, with major construction set to begin in 2027; Eby challenged the Conservatives to tell these workers they are "firing you" by shifting plans.
While the Conservative proposal claims a bridge would cut commute times by up to 30 minutes, critics question its feasibility; the tunnel project awaits environmental approval later this year, and the bridge plan lacks detailed cost and timeline specifics.
