NDP leader says he won’t run in Quebec byelection as Boulerice announces departure

On Monday, NDP Leader Avi Lewis announced he will not run in the Rosemont—La Petite-Patrie byelection to fill the seat vacated by Alexandre Boulerice, who is leaving Parliament after 15 years to pursue provincial office.
Boulerice said his shift to provincial politics reflects where urgent battles are fought in Quebec, citing housing affordability and inequality as increasingly difficult to address from Ottawa. He described the move as completing his federal work.
The NDP caucus now sits at five MPs, falling below the 12 seats required for official party status in the House. Without this status, the party loses caucus funding and committee representation.
Despite the caucus reduction, Lewis remains 'not fazed' by Boulerice's departure, calling it a 'move of principle.' He stated, 'It's a riding that we're going to work our butts off to maintain and I'm confident we'll have an excellent candidate.'
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre and Bloc MP Christine Normandin both wished Boulerice luck with his transition to provincial politics. The NDP must now defend the seat in an upcoming byelection without their only Quebec MP.
