NCAA permanently revokes eligibility of 3 players for betting on their own games
Three Division I basketball players were permanently banned after the NCAA found they bet on their own games and manipulated performances, earning over $15,000 in payouts, officials confirmed.
- The NCAA permanently disqualified three Division I men’s basketball players for wagering on their own games during the 2024-25 season while playing for teams located in California’s Central Valley and Bay Area.
- The probe commenced after Fresno State and an organization monitoring sports betting integrity alerted authorities to unusual prop bets involving Mykell Robinson, uncovering coordinated efforts among players to manipulate game results and share inside information.
- Mykell Robinson made 13 daily fantasy sports prop bets totaling $454, which included multiple wagers involving his Fresno State teammate Jalen Weaver. Additionally, Robinson and Steven Vasquez coordinated efforts to manipulate game performances and communicated plans to intentionally underperform during contests.
- Robinson participated in 17 games last season, averaging 10.3 points per contest, while Weaver started 24 of 25 games and posted an average of 12.5 points each game. Vasquez took part in 29 games throughout four seasons—three with Fresno State and one at San Jose State. A total of $2,200 was wagered collectively on a bet involving Robinson’s underperformance, resulting in a payout of $15,950 distributed among those who placed bets.
- The three athletes have been dismissed and are no longer attending their former institutions, which faced no disciplinary action; meanwhile, the NCAA’s enforcement division has reported enhanced efforts to identify violations amid rising concerns about sports betting.
