Division I Cabinet Changes Transfer Portal Windows for Basketball and some Other Sports
The NCAA Division I Cabinet shortened basketball transfer windows to 15 days post-championship and adjusted other sports following committee recommendations.
- The NCAA Division I Cabinet moved men's and women's basketball portals to a 15-day window opening the day after each NCAA Tournament championship game, effective April 7-21 for men and April 6-20 for women.
- The Men's and Women's Basketball Oversight Committees recommended the shift in November, marking the fourth revision since the 2022-23 academic year that cut transfer windows from 60 to 45 to 30 days, reflecting college football changes.
- For men's wrestling, the transfer window will be 30 days starting April 1, shortened from 45 days, and following head-coaching changes, a 15-day portal opens five days after a replacement is announced.
- Midyear basketball transfers face new eligibility limits, as those enrolling during the first academic term will not be eligible to compete at a second school, and timing revisions alter when student-athletes can enter the transfer portal.
- The Cabinet also adjusted postseason revenue units for basketball, approving three units per sex and scheduling 2026 NCAA tournaments funds for conference offices in 2027, with Val Ackerman, Big East commissioner, praising the change as very grateful.
