New 9,700-Ton US Navy Destroyer USS Ted Stevens Enters Active Service
The ceremony will mark the Navy’s formal acceptance of the 510-foot destroyer and draw about 3,000 ticketed attendees, organizers said.
On Saturday, Oct. 3, the U.S. Navy officially commissioned the USS Ted Stevens, its newest Flight III Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, during a formal ceremony in Whittier, Alaska.
Named for late Alaska Senator Ted Stevens, the destroyer honors his four decades of Senate service and features an advanced AN/SPY-61 radar system providing a "technological leap" in air and missile defense.
Captain Mary Katey Hays commands a crew of roughly 340 sailors, who received warm welcomes from Whittier residents including a custom curry blend created for the captain by local business owners.
Following the ceremony, the USS Ted Stevens will sail to Juneau for a brief stop, then transit the Panama Canal to reach its official homeport in Norfolk, Virginia.
The commissioning enhances naval warfighting readiness and supports Department of War priorities to enforce maritime dominance while maintaining persistent presence in Arctic and North Pacific environments.
