National Guard Works to Clear 100-Car Pileup on North Carolina Interstate
A minor crash and heavy snow trapped more than 100 vehicles, including 30 tractor-trailers, on I-85; National Guard and state agencies worked for hours to clear the highway.
On Saturday night, a minor crash on Interstate 85 in Kannapolis snowballed into a mass pileup involving over 100 vehicles, according to North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Icy roads and heavy snow compounded a minor collision near Exit 60 involving a tractor‑trailer and a jeep, forcing tractor‑trailers to slow and stall.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol says more than 30 tractor‑trailers and 70‑plus cars are trapped, with the North Carolina National Guard's two All‑Hazard Response Teams assisting and NCDOT plowing the highway.
I‑85 was shut between Exit 60 and Exit 63, prompting detours as authorities warned clearing would take hours and urged motorists to avoid the area.
State troopers reported 817 calls and 750 collisions statewide Saturday, while about 240 million people were under cold‑weather advisories amid subfreezing conditions forecast into February.
