BJP's Kiren Rijiju calls Naseeruddin Shah ‘dangerous urban Dimagi Naxal’ after actor backs Jamia students
Rijiju accused Shah of undermining democracy after the actor backed Jamia students seeking union elections that have not been held since 2006.
On Thursday, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju attacked actor Naseeruddin Shah, calling him a "dangerous urban Naxal" and "subversive intellectual" after the 76-year-old posted a video supporting protesting Jamia Millia Islamia students.
In a video posted on Tuesday, Shah criticized the BJP-led government for attempting to destroy the education system while wearing a "Dimagi Naxal" pin to show solidarity with Jamia students demanding union restoration.
Shah challenged authorities to take action against him, declaring, "I proudly declare that I am Dimagi Naxal," while questioning whether the government would continue breaking "the courage of our country's youth" and destroying democracy.
Rijiju stated he previously respected Shah but was unaware of his "dangerous" views, escalating the political row over the actor's consistent support for student causes at Jawaharlal Nehru University and Satyajit Ray Film Institute.
Demonstrations at Jamia entered their 17th day on Wednesday as students continue demanding restoration of their elected union, dissolved in 2006, with videos of campus violence circulating on social media.
Naseeruddin Shah had described himself as a "mental Naxalite." Union Minister Kiren Rijiju responded to this statement, saying he didn't consider Shah that dangerous and called his thinking harmful to democracy.
