Sick of Earth? NASA Is Recruiting Volunteers for a Yearlong Moon and Mars Simulation

The 14-month mission will test how crews handle confined habitats, crop growing and Mars-time living before future deep-space flights.

  • NASA is recruiting four volunteers for its 12-month Moon and Mars Exploration Analog simulation, which begins no earlier than August 2027 at the Johnson Space Center in Houston.
  • Designed to replicate space travel, the program involves three segments using two different habitats to help characterize risks and test countermeasures for long-duration exploration, spokesperson Kelsey Spivey told CNN.
  • To qualify, prospective participants must be U.S. citizens or green card holders aged 30 to 55 with "astronaut-like qualifications," such as advanced STEM degrees, and commit to a 14-month timeline.
  • Crew members will test performance in a 900-square-foot facility while adapting to a Martian day, or sol, which is about 40 minutes longer than a standard day on Earth.
  • Former participant Nathan Jones, a doctor who served as medical officer in the 1,700-square-foot Mars Dune Alpha, noted the experience strengthened his ambition to become an astronaut despite emotional challenges.
