NASA Astronaut Don Pettit Returns to Earth on 70th Birthday After ISS Mission
On April 19, 2025, NASA astronaut Don Pettit and Russian cosmonauts Alexei Ovchinin and Ivan Vagner landed in Kazakhstan after completing a seven-month mission aboard the ISS.
Their return followed a mission that began on September 11, 2024, with a crew transfer after a new team arrived at the station earlier in April.
During 220 days in orbit, the crew conducted research on water sanitization, plant growth, and fire behavior in microgravity, while maintaining the space station.
The trio orbited Earth 3,520 times, traveling 93.3 million miles, and Pettit, NASA's oldest active astronaut, turned 70 on landing day; NASA said he was “doing well and in the range of what is expected.”
Their safe touchdown in a remote Kazakh location at 6:20 a.m. local time marked the close of Expedition 72 and set the stage for Expedition 73 at the ISS.
