Myanmar’s president arrives in China seeking stronger trade ties
The five-day visit follows Myanmar’s push to deepen strategic and economic ties with China after years of isolation and sanctions.
On Monday, June 15, 2026, Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing arrived in Beijing for a five-day state visit to strengthen strategic ties with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
Min's April election formalized his power following a 2021 coup that ended tentative democracy. China has deepened its influence by backing military rulers with strategic investments, including oil and gas pipelines to the Bay of Bengal.
Before this trip, Min visited India from May 30 to June 3, assuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Myanmar would protect India's security interests. In Beijing, he will also meet with Premier Li Qiang and top legislator Zhao Leji.
A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated last week that "China and Myanmar have stood together through thick and thin, looked out for each other and forged solidarity and cooperation, promoting China-Myanmar relations to achieve considerable progress."
Foreign Minister Tin Maung Swe previously held talks with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi to discuss scaling up bilateral ties and accelerating development amid the ongoing civil war.
