Elon Musk Says Tesla Needs to Build 'Gigantic Chip Fab' to Meet AI and Robotics Needs

Tesla aims to produce up to 1 million AI chips monthly with Samsung and Intel, building its own fab to meet soaring demand in AI and robotics, Elon Musk said.

  • Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced at the Saudi-U.S. Investment Forum in Riyadh that Samsung Electronics and other Korean companies will produce Tesla AI chips and that Tesla plans a 'gigantic' terra fab.
  • With microchips powering modern technologies, Musk argued that demand has surged amid the AI and robotics industries, and supplier output falls short, even in best-case scenarios.
  • According to Musk, Tesla's potential fab could begin at 100,000 wafer starts per month and eventually scale up to 1 million, while TSMC's annual capacity reached 17 million wafer starts.
  • Pressure on existing foundries increases as tech giants clamoring for more supply from chipmakers like TSMC, and Musk said the only option is to go build some very big chip fab.
  • At the Tesla shareholders meeting, Musk said he's still 'trying to figure out' details and argued AI and robotics could expand the global economy by 10 to 100 times.
