Mumbai man killed as tree falls on him amid heavy rain in Kurla; third such death in recent weeks
CCTV captured the collapse as residents said municipal crews arrived after a two-hour delay, and officials said the city has seen three monsoon-linked deaths in less than a week.
On Sunday, a 63-year-old man, Yunus Kundawala, died after a tree collapsed onto his shop in Kurla West, Mumbai, while he was preparing for its opening day.
The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert for Mumbai following torrential rainfall, with parts of the city recording over 200 mm within a 24-hour window.
This marks the third monsoon-related fatality in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region within one week, following 11-year-old Vihaan Srivastava's death on June 30 in Chembur when a tree fell on a school bus.
Local residents alleged that municipal workers cleared the site too quickly, while Maharashtra Navnirman Sena leader Mahendra Bhanushali questioned the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's tree maintenance practices.
Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious and avoid old trees and waterlogged areas as the IMD forecasts continued intense rainfall across Maharashtra through the week.
Continuous heavy rain and winds in Mumbai and surrounding areas have led to an increase in tree-falling incidents. A large, old tree fell in Naupada, Kurla, killing 63-year-old Yunus Kundawala. Several vehicles were also crushed under the tree, although no one was inside.
