Mother guilty over baby's hairdryer burns death
Jurors found Courtney Gartshore culpably and recklessly caused Dahlia-Rose to be exposed to heat from a hairdryer, after hearing the baby suffered burns to 18% of her body.
- Courtney Gartshore was found guilty of culpable homicide in the death of her three-month-old daughter, Dahlia-Rose, in Peterhead. Jurors convicted Gartshore after hearing she recklessly exposed the infant to heat from a hairdryer while in her sole care.
- Prosecutors argued that because only Gartshore and the infant were in the property, the mother was responsible for the appliance. Forensic evidence confirmed Dahlia-Rose's DNA was found on the hairdryer, which caused burns to 18 per cent of her body.
- The trial heard allegations that Gartshore had consumed alcohol and the Class B drug mephedrone while the baby's sole carer. Other charges initially faced by the mother were dropped by the Crown before the case reached the jury.
- Judge Simon Collins, who described the case as "disturbing," remanded Gartshore in custody. She is due to be sentenced at the High Court in Edinburgh on August 14.
- Detective Inspector James Callander stated, "Children are defenceless and should be protected." He acknowledged the local community and partner agencies for their support during the complex, sensitive enquiry into the death in September 2023.
