India Faces Mass Air Travel Crisis
IndiGo cancelled over 2,000 flights due to pilot rest rule noncompliance, affecting 100,000 passengers and prompting DGCA to issue a show-cause notice to CEO Pieter Elbers.
- On Dec 7, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation issued a show-cause notice to IndiGo chief executive Pieter Elbers, accusing the airline of failing to plan revised duty and rest requirements and passenger assistance during cancellations.
- IndiGo miscalculated pilots needed after India’s new pilot safety rules raised cumulative rest to 48 hours, causing roster gaps from Dec 1, DGCA said.
- More than 2,000 flights were cancelled, affecting an estimated 100,000 passengers and causing on-time performance to fall from 80 per cent to 30 per cent.
- Many travelers reported lost luggage and little assistance, with Mr Veerabhadraya Gurupadayya, 75-year-old passenger, barely reaching his son's wedding after a Dec 5 cancellation.
- With IndiGo handling six out of every 10 travellers, Vijay Gopalan urged the government to ease entry for other carriers, while economists demanded proportionate repercussions for planning failures.
