MTA Plans to Replace Thousands of Decades-Old NYC Subway Cars
The MTA plans to replace 36.4% of its fleet with 2,390 new cars featuring open gangways and improved technology, funded by a $68 billion Capital Program, officials said.
- On Thursday, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority released a Request for Proposals for 2,390 new subway cars, marking the agency's largest order ever. The R262 models will replace aging trains on the 1, 3, and 6 lines.
- Aging R62 and R62A fleets, some dating to the 1980s, prompted this procurement to improve service reliability. The new trains will replace 36.4% of the MTA's 6,574-car fleet, significantly reducing breakdown frequency.
- Funded by the $68 billion 2025-2029 Capital Program, the RFP requires performance-based designs. Up to 60% of the order could feature 'open gangway' designs, which officials say will maximize capacity and comfort.
- Vendors have until September 8 to submit proposals, with the MTA expecting to award the contract in 2028. Commuters will not see the new cars on tracks until at least 2030, officials said.
- Transit advocates, including the Riders Alliance, support the open gangway design to boost standing room. According to spokesman Danny Pearlstein, the upgrade targets economic growth near the ends of lines citywide.
