In Mozambique, a meeting was held on the evening of 23 March between the new president, Daniel Chapo, and the opponent Venancio Mondlane, who continues to claim his victory in the presidential election on 9 October. The meeting took place at the Joaquim Chissano International Conference Centre in Maputo, so it took more than six months after these contested elections for the two men to finally agree to talk to each other.
The announcement was made by the Mozambican presidency in a statement. The meeting served to “discuss solutions to the challenges facing the country”.
