Mother of Russian lab worker who died of plague: ‘I know the truth’
WHO requested more details after the death of a 28-year-old lab technician, while Russian authorities said tests on nearly 5,000 contacts found no plague.
- On October 2, 28-year-old Darya Shipilova died after being hospitalized with severe pneumonia symptoms at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute in Siberia, where she worked as a lab technician.
- Reports allege Shipilova broke a test tube containing live bacteria, though her mother, Svetlana Shipilova, told outlet Glubina that lab equipment is "well protected" and disputed the account.
- Just under 200 people who contacted the lab worker are under observation, while searches for "chuma" on Google skyrocketed by 5,000 per cent compared with last month, according to Verstka.
- Fears of an outbreak prompted four countries to implement border quarantine controls, according to CNN; Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan closed crossing points.
- The building where Shipilova lived was disinfected at least three times, though workers reportedly told residents the measure was to combat cockroaches, according to The Telegraph, amid resident frustration over lack of official information.
