Stranded Solomon Islands Ferry Passengers Adrift at Sea Brought on Shore
More than 70 passengers remained aboard the drifting MV Awka as Australian and New Caledonian aircraft delivered food, water and rescue gear, officials said.
On Friday, more than 70 passengers became stranded aboard the MV Awka after its engine failed between Anuta and Vanikoro in Temotu Province, prompting Australia and New Caledonia to launch an international rescue operation.
The vessel's engine overheated and failed while traveling, leaving it adrift at sea until the Panama-registered bulk carrier Sunnine 3 reached the passengers on Sunday morning to transfer food and water.
Passenger John Tua, a provincial nurse, has used the ship's Starlink connection to keep relatives informed, stating, "Everyone is OK, no-one panicked, passengers were calm & we're just waiting for the rescue ships to come."
Authorities are currently assessing whether to safely transfer passengers or tow the vessel to harbor, while Temotu Premier Stanley Tehiahua confirmed a police patrol boat is en route from Honiara.
This incident follows the recent sinking of ferry MV Matui near Vanuatu, prompting researcher Peter Nuttall to call for Australia and New Zealand to invest more in Pacific maritime safety infrastructure.
