Volkswagen floats making Audis in US to swerve Trump tariffs

Volkswagen could relocate some production of its high-end Audi line to dodge US tariffs on automobiles ordered by President Donald Trump, the German carmaker's CEO said in an interview.

The first European manufacturer, the group is particularly affected by the customs surcharges imposed by Donald Trump, which have penalized car imports into the United States since the beginning of April.

In order to combat the rise in US tariffs, Volkswagen, the leading European manufacturer, could relocate part of the Audi brand's production to the United States. The possibility of American production for Porsche cars is, however, not up to date.

The boss of the German automotive group Olivier Blume says he wants to do "everything possible to remain a reliable investor and partner in the United States", ensuring that he is in discussion with the Trump administration.
