Venezuela Earthquakes Leave Over 100 US Deportees Missing
Survivors say the hotel collapse trapped recently deported Venezuelans as rescuers searched for more than 50,000 missing people, officials said.
- On Wednesday, more than 100 Venezuelan deportees went missing after a hotel in La Guaira collapsed during powerful back-to-back earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude.
- A deportation flight from Miami carrying 146 Venezuelans, including 19 women and seven children, arrived just hours before the earthquakes struck; authorities transported passengers to the Hotel Santuario La Llanada for processing.
- Survivor Lisbeth Portillo, 58, escaped the rubble with around 20 other deportees and walked five kilometers seeking help; meanwhile, the Venezuelan government reported more than 1,700 deaths and nearly 200 buildings completely flattened.
- Rep. Carlos Gimenez told CNN on Tuesday the Trump administration bears no responsibility for the missing deportees, calling it "just an act of God," sparking fierce backlash from critics.
- Frustration grows over the government's response as rescue efforts continue five days after the quakes; Venezuela has received support from 30 nations, including 1,000 metric tons of supplies and more than 3,600 rescue workers.
