Meningitis Update as Vaccine Now Available to Two Groups
Vaccinations now offered to 27 confirmed and suspected meningitis B cases linked to Club Chemistry, including sixth-formers and university students, UK Health Security Agency said.
- On Friday, the UK Health Security Agency expanded meningitis vaccination centers across Kent as the outbreak reached 27 confirmed or suspected cases, with two students already dead.
- Experts are investigating why this Meningitis B outbreak appears more transmissible; Professor Robin May, UKHSA chief scientific officer, said bacteria may spread through shared vapes, cups, and utensils.
- Anyone who attended Club Chemistry from March 5 to March 15 is now eligible for vaccination, alongside specific student groups; more than 8,500 antibiotics and 1,600 vaccines have been administered in Kent.
- Health Secretary Wes Streeting visited the University of Kent and urged students to avoid sharing vapes, saying he was not the "fun police" and young people should live normally.
- The UKHSA will release 20,000 vaccines from NHS supplies to the private market to alleviate pharmacy demand, ensuring broader access to MenB protection during the outbreak.
