Montreal homeless shelter sees 8 overdoses within an hour

  • Six people in downtown Montreal were hospitalized after overdosing on street drugs contaminated with synthetic opiates. The situation is concerning but not uncommon due to the prevalence of such contamination. One person remains in critical condition.
  • Five of the six individuals transported to the hospital are now stable, while one person is still in critical condition. The overdoses occurred back-to-back and it is uncertain if the victims were using the same substance. The Projets Autochtones du Québec shelter, which provides accommodation for Indigenous people, was affected.
  • The PAQ shelter staff and residents are traumatized and devastated by the incidents. The nearby area has experienced an increase in the availability of fentanyl and other dangerous drugs over the past year. Montreal's public health department is working with various partners to investigate and understand the situation.
