Slovenia’s Parliament Speaker Choice Signals Trouble for Premier
Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob’s chances of forming a government became more complicated Friday when lawmakers picked a new parliament speaker whose party is seen as more likely to back his rival’s right-wing bloc.
Stevanović is the leader of the "Truth" party.
The president of the anti-system movement Resnica (Istina), Zoran Stevanović, was elected today as the president of the Slovenian parliament, after his election was supported by 48 deputies in a secret ballot.
The National Assembly (NA) held a debate on the proposal to make Zoran Stevanović the Speaker of the National Assembly. There was no discussion in the parties that supported his candidacy, but there were quite a few warnings in the center-left parties that Stevanović was not suitable for the position of Speaker of the National Assembly. The Left and SD MPs will not take over the ballots, and Svoboda will vote against, they announced.
The center-left wants a speaker of the National Assembly who is suitable for the position. Who they will support in the coalition trio is expected to be announced at Friday's inaugural session of the National Assembly.
Jernej Vrtovec, Anže Logar and Zoran Stevanović did not want to reveal in Odmevi who they would propose for the post of Speaker of the National Assembly. Anže Logar claimed that they had not discussed it. Luka Mesec, meanwhile, considers Zoran Stevanović to be completely unsuitable.
