Mob attacks Protestant pastor in Odisha (Matters India)
Congress demands a time-bound probe and protection for the pastor and displaced families after a mob of 40 reportedly Bajrang Dal activists attacked and humiliated a pastor.
- On January 4, Pastor Bipin Bihari Naik was dragged barefoot for about 1.5km, tied and repeatedly beaten during Sunday prayers in Parjang village, Dhenkanal district.
- A mob of around 40 people reportedly consisting of Bajrang Dal activists surrounded the house and assaulted worshippers amid accusations of `forced conversion`.
- Images circulated showing alleged abuse included AI-generated images disproving cow dung allegations, while the pastor was publicly humiliated at a Hanuman temple with sindoor and sandals garland.
- A first information report was registered on January 13, and police say at least nine people have been held as Congress general secretary K.C. Venugopal wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah seeking a probe, protection, and arrests.
- The India Hate Lab found at least 1,318 hate-speech events last year, and rights groups say BJP `anti-conversion` proposals have emboldened attackers, while Odisha's Biju Janata Dal called the attacks grave human rights violations.
