MNA: Brigham Nurses Seek Compromise to Avert Strike While Protecting Patient Care Quality; MGB Makes Minimal Movement and Ends Talks
Nurses say they made substantial concessions, but MGB ended talks after 11 hours and refused further bargaining unless workers accepted its last offer.
On Thursday, October 8, negotiations between Brigham and Women's Hospital and Mass General Brigham stalled, leaving an open-ended strike scheduled for Wednesday, October 14.
After an 11-hour bargaining session, MGB halted discussions despite nurses, represented by the Massachusetts Nurses Association , making substantial compromises including reduced wage proposals and extended contract terms.
Mass General Brigham reported $2.3 billion in profits last year and nearly $9.2 million in compensation for CEO Anne Klibanski, while nurses seek wages aligned with the Boston hospital market.
Management declined to meet Friday unless nurses accepted their final proposal, though the Massachusetts Nurses Association remains willing to negotiate further to avert the strike.
The planned action is an Unfair Labor Practice strike, which provides workers greater legal protection, while nurses advocate for stable staffing and affordable health insurance coverage.
