MLS commissioner Don Garber optimistic about CF Montreal’s future
Garber said the club needs a year-round venue and committed funding, with a $500 million modernization plan still lacking approval.
- On Thursday, Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber urged Quebec to fund a $500-million modernization of the 1976 Olympic Stadium, calling the project essential for CF Montréal's long-term viability.
- The league's shift to a fall-to-spring calendar necessitates year-round stadium capacity, prompting Garber to dismiss Stade Saputo as an "MLS 1.0 stadium" incapable of supporting modern growth.
- While Quebec approved an $870-million roof replacement for the 60,000-seat venue, the province has not yet committed funding for interior redevelopment needed to generate commercial revenues.
- Garber described his visit as "one of the coolest stadium visits I've ever had," noting the Olympic Stadium invited CF Montréal to become its primary tenant.
- If realized, Garber believes the renovated Olympic Stadium could become "one of the best stadiums in the world," though opinions remain divided about further interior renovations.
