Mizzou baseball falls short against No. 6 Texas despite late rally
Volantis allowed one hit and struck out 11 as Texas used late insurance runs to hold off Mizzou in the series opener.
No. 6 Texas defeated Mizzou 6-3 behind a masterful pitching performance by Dylan Volantis, who struck out 11 batters over seven innings in the series opener.
Mizzou appeared poised to stay competitive after taking two of three against Vanderbilt, with Jase Woita launching a home run to start the game, but Volantis struck out eight batters through three innings to halt the Tigers' momentum.
Texas scored twice in the third on sacrifice flies by Aiden Robbins and Ethan Mendoza, then added two more runs on a Casey Borba home run before Anthony Pack's single extended the lead to 5-1 in the fifth.
Mizzou rallied in the eighth with back-to-back doubles by Jamal George and Woita and singles by Kam Durnin and Mateo Serna to cut the deficit to 5-3, but Carsen Tinney's eighth-inning solo shot provided insurance as Sam Cozart closed out the ninth.
With only Donovan Jordan and Woita recording hits off the 6-foot-6 sophomore, Mizzou faces a significant pitching challenge on Friday at 6:30 p.m. in Austin, where Brady Kehlenbrink will take the mound against Texas pitcher Luke Harrison.
