Missouri rejects ballot measure to overturn abortion protections
The defeat keeps Missouri’s constitutional abortion protections in place and blocks a permanent ban on gender-affirming care for minors, opponents said.
- On Tuesday, Missouri voters rejected Amendment 3 with nearly 55% opposing the measure, preserving constitutional abortion protections established in 2024. The Associated Press called the election at 10:18 p.m.
- Referred to voters by the Republican-controlled legislature, Amendment 3 sought to repeal the 2024 reproductive rights initiative while banning most abortions except for rape or incest up to 12 weeks and prohibiting gender-affirming care for minors.
- Stop the Ban raised more than $27 million, vastly outspending Her Health, Her Future's roughly $7 million. Former Chief Justice Michael Wolff called the amendment's language "misleading," urging voters "Don't let politicians fool us into banning abortion again."
- Republican Governor Mike Kehoe campaigned for Amendment 3 on Monday, telling supporters its defeat would be "a sad day for Missouri." He had previously suggested voters were confused when they approved the reproductive freedom amendment two years ago.
- This result marks the second time in two years that Missourians affirmed reproductive access, joining 11 states that passed abortion rights amendments since the 2022 Dobbs decision. The outcome blocks Republican lawmakers from reinstating the abortion ban.
