Missouri Mother of 5 Killed While Buying Slushies with Children, Police Say
Police said the shooting was an apparent bystander killing, and a second man was wounded and remains in critical condition.
On Tuesday, Shakeela Martin, 35, was fatally shot while leaving a BP gas station in Ferguson after an altercation inside the store spilled into the parking lot, according to the Ferguson Police Department.
This shooting marks the sixth gas station incident in the area within three months, while a second male victim remains hospitalized in critical condition with authorities still determining if he was the intended target.
"She was here to purchase some soft drinks for her young kids," Ferguson Police Chief Troy Doyle said, while Ferguson resident Sterling Henderson expressed concern about the emotional impact on Martin's children.
A GoFundMe campaign has been established to support Martin's five children, who were preparing to move into a new home the day after the shooting; organizers said "We will forever cherish Shakeela's memory."
Police installed a portable camera system at the station to detect stolen vehicles while investigating; no arrests have been made, and officials urge anyone with information to contact CrimeStoppers at 866-371-TIPS.
