Mississippi US Senate candidates battle over ballots as winner remains unclear
The Associated Press says roughly 30,000 ballots remain outstanding as absentee and provisional votes continue to be counted statewide.
Nearly 2,500 votes separate Democrat Scott Colom and Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith in the Mississippi Senate race, with votes still being counted on Friday.
Unlike in some states, Mississippi lacks a central vote reporting system, requiring The Associated Press to communicate directly with 82 counties for vote counts.
In Hinds County, roughly 7% of ballots remain uncounted; Rankin County officials reported around 2,200 outstanding votes, including 1,667 provisional ballots.
Mississippi Secretary Michael Watson reported Thursday that about 7,000 provisional ballots had been processed, with about 80% accepted by officials.
Recounts in Mississippi occur only via court order, while The Associated Press continues revising its outstanding vote estimates as officials gather additional data.
